How to Wear Monochrome Outfits – Tips, Tricks & Hacks
It’s helpful to have a lot of colorful clothing, but not essential, if you want to start wearing monochrome.
I am a color lover. I love color, especially in my closet. In my bedroom, I have a rainbow-colored rack (see below). It’s so easy to create a monochromatic look with this rack. My own rainbow rack
It’s great to have a lot of things in one color, but not everyone has this type of closet. Having a colorful wardrobe is not necessary if you follow the right style rules.
You need to be aware of a few things before you go monochromatic. You can create a monochromatic style without spending a fortune by using these tips and tricks.
- Feel comfortable. Choose a color you feel comfortable in and love. Black is the color you should choose. Wear an all-black outfit. Green is the color. If you like the color and feel comfortable in it, you may have a lot of items that are that color.
- White and black shoes are acceptable. You could try an all-orange look. You don’t own orange shoes. Relax, it’s still possible to wear a monochromatic look. Wear your white or dark shoes, I promise that they will look fantastic.
- Textures and patterns are your best friends. Textured fabrics give the outfit depth and interest. It’s fine if the pattern comes in multiple colors, as long as you choose the dominant color to match your outfit.
- Hair and makeup are accessories. You may only have one dress in the color you’re looking for and want to make it monochromatic by adding more accessories. Try matching your hair and makeup accessories.
It’s time to put these tips into action. You will be able to see your wardrobe in a new light and create outfits you never thought possible.
Below you’ll find a lot of monochrome style ideas and examples. Pick your favorite color and let’s start!
1. Easy Mode – Jeans & Neutrals Monochrome Outfit
Start with no fuss, no complications. Easy. Most of us have an excellent monochromatic look in our closets, and we don’t know it. What is that look? You should wear your jeans with a neutral, plain top.
Everyone’s wardrobe should include blue denim. I chose a pair wide-leg jeans, and a sweatshirt for my monochromatic easy-mode outfit. For shoes, I wore a pair of classic blue Converse. I was having trouble accessorizing my outfit until I remembered that I owned this navy neck scarf.
As an example, try wearing your favorite pair jeans with a monochromatic top. You can pair black, white, beige or off-white jeans with a similar colored top.
Try to balance the lighter and darker shades together when styling off-white or blue. This will make it easier to create a cohesive style. This is what I did above, with a light blue shirt and dark blue jeans.
Shoes and accessories should be no problem since these neutrals are so versatile. If you’re still unsure, I recommend that you stick with similar shades. Stick to lighter accessories and shoes for lighter outfits. Stick to darker shades for darker outfits.
2. Medium mode – Orange Monochrome outfit with patterns & textured fabrics
Let’s take it to the next level. This time, I will add more texture and patterns. It can be challenging to work with patterns, but using them as part of a monochromatic style is the best way to get them to look good. Focus on the dominant color in the pattern.
I chose an orange outfit for my medium-level look. For the base, I combined a basic tank top and cropped pants.
I wore an orange silk shirt to add some depth and layering. To give it some depth, I added an orange shirt. I finished off with a pair chunky white sneakers, which have the slightest orange detail on their sole.
A monochromatic look can be made so much more fun with patterns and fabrics! My most important advice is to: play around with texture and pattern, particularly if you want to create a monochromatic look.
Try a patterned piece with a texture that is simple (silk or linen) if you’re afraid to mix too much pattern and texture. It can be difficult, but you will find out what works with your wardrobe with some experimentation.
To achieve this look, I recommend that you use your makeup as a complementary accessory. You don’t need to use full eye makeup like I did, but you could try a matching lipstick or blush.
3. Hard Mode – Pink Monochrome Outfit
Let’s create an outfit using all our tips.
It’s helpful to look at your closet when you are more advanced and ask yourself what color is dominant. This is the color that will create a monochromatic look. You need to use a range of pieces when you combine all these elements.
I chose a basic cropped top in light pink for my monochromatic outfit of a difficult level. To finish off my outfit, I added a pair tie dye pink mom jeans. I layered my pink fluffy coat. My shoes are a pair pink Vans, and my bag is light pink color.
This look is a perfect example of all my tips: it’s a monochromatic look that I love and feel comfortable wearing. Pink is my favorite color. It doesn’t necessarily mean that my pink pieces all work together. I came up with this particular combination after trying out a lot of combinations.
This look is perfect. The coat texture and tie-dye pattern add depth to the look. All of them work together to create an elegant monochrome look.
How to master the monochromatic outfit?
- If your monochrome outfit is boring, try mixing up textures and patterns. Mix stripes, spots or textures such as velvet and silk to add depth and dimension to your monochrome outfit.
- Color is not something to be afraid of. Try adding color to your monochrome look with monochromatic accessories if you aren’t comfortable wearing it.
- Layer your pieces. Layering pieces will add depth to a monochromatic look. Wear a monochromatic jacket to match your dress or monochrome pants and a shirt underneath a matching outerwear piece.
Last Thoughts about Monochrome Fashion
It’s hard to create an outfit that is 100 percent monochromatic. I had some problems with my closet. It is a look that you can master. You can borrow from your siblings, parents or even your S/O. Mix and match patterns, fabrics and other items to create the perfect look for you.
Try monochromatic! You should try monochromatic, especially if your closet is filled with neutrals. Monochromatic closets can be a great alternative to contrasting wardrobes.
